Next Century Cities (NCC) has member municipalities in Ponca City and Sallisaw, Oklahoma. On March 10, 2020, NCC and National Consumer League submitted a letter in response to the Oklahoma Corporation Commission’s (OCC) Notice of Inquiry on proposals for its Universal Service Fund and Lifeline Program that could improve broadband access and adoption for residents in need.

Federal and state Lifeline programs are essential for ensuring that low-income households have access to voice and broadband services. The joint letter reiterates the importance of Lifeline and, specifically, supports calls for the OCC to increase its state benefits to $10/month. At a time when the Federal Communications Commission’s most recent proposals for the federal Lifeline program threaten to limit its reach and effectiveness, we applaud OCC’s efforts to strengthen its state program which connects vulnerable populations in Oklahoma to education, jobs, family, and emergency services.
