On September 26, 2019, Color of Change and Facebook hosted a town hall event in Atlanta, Georgia. Digital advocates and civil rights leaders from across the country were invited to share their expertise on how social media impacts both connected and disconnected communities.
In a digital society, it is increasingly important to balance privacy, safety, and freedom of expression on digital platforms. Francella Ochillo, Next Century Cities’ Executive Director, moderated a panel discussion on platform accountability with Neil Potts (Facebook), K.J. Bagchi (Asian Americans Advancing Justice), Madihha Ahussain (Muslim Advocates), and Heidi Beirich (Southern Poverty Law Center). Other parts of the program explored how misinformation campaigns can impact voter and census participation. Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s COO, and other senior leadership also reiterated the company’s support for a safe and inclusive online ecosystem.
